About the formation of Five Minute’s To Mayhem

Five Minute’s To Mayhem hail from Auckland New Zealand and mix a blend of their own Rock with ‘Classic Rock’. ‘Our style is a mix of everything rock and comes from our life experiences’ says Ian Black. ‘Rock is life and we write music and lyrics based on our own lives. We’re telling our stories’

Formally known as Fuser in their home town Auckland New Zealand, the band had recorded albums, toured extensively up and down the country and opened for overseas touring bands including Everclear (2012, 2015 and 2017), Presidents of the United States of America (2013) and others. They also included a covers component to the band which allowed them to play street fairs, outdoor festivals, private and corporate functions as well as their own music. A mix of original and well known songs throughout the rock age. This led to a Friday night residency at ‘The Whisky’ on Auckland Ponsonby Rd locally known as ‘The Strip’ in 2017. ‘Many well-known New Zealand artists play The Whisky too, so we get them up on stage with us to do a few numbers when we can’ comments drummer Karl Mai.

In 2016 Lead Singer Ian Black was nominated for a Grammy for ‘Best rock song’ for 2017 Grammy’s. 600 Cops was the new single for Fuser at the time and having a ‘Grammy nod’ was a real achievement. ‘I remember when I got the call, I couldn’t believe it! You must be joking. It was a huge surprise, but a great feeling’ comments singer/bassist Ian Black.

With their eyes set on bigger things and overseas touring it became clear that the band name was an issue. With Fuser being branded to so many different products and other bands a name change was needed. After much consideration ‘Five Minute’s To Mayhem’ became the phrase of choice. ‘With the way the music industry is Mayhem is always close and you never know what is going to happen tomorrow. FMTM (Five Minute’s To Mayhem) as we like to call it represents the nature of every show, the industry, our creativity. Chaos and mayhem are a constant for us and we love it!’ comments singer/guitarist Steve Rickard. In the middle of 2019 Fuser was reborn in Five Minute’s To Mayhem. ‘Same guys, same band. We have re skinned ourselves to better represent what the music world feels to us’ says singer/bassist Ian Black

With tour booking underway the band is off to the US for 2021.

Steve Rickard Bio

Music has always been part of my life since I can remember. One of my earliest memories is listening to the George Baker Selection with my late Uncle, I must have been no more than 3 years old.

There was always music in the house, my Mother being a mad Elvis fan, and my Father was into the Beatles and the Stones and a variety of other bands that at that stage I’d never heard of.

I guess I was a drummer before I loved the guitar. I was always bashing whatever I could find in the house to the beat of whatever was playing on our stereo at the time.

At the age of 4 I got a guitar for Christmas from my Parents. I really had no idea how to start to play the thing, so I made my own brand of hideous noise on it for years before I started to learn in earnest in my teenage years

The usual jumping around in from of mirrors with my guitar or a tennis racquet was as far as performing went at that stage, but I knew I wanted to be in a band from an early age. I would always imagine it was me playing the songs I heard on the radio

High school was largely just listening to different bands, (Duran Duran were big in my life at that stage) and mucking around with mates as a drummer in the school music room for a little while.

Then it all changed. I remember vividly, it was 1986 in my room and I stole my cousins tape collection. That was when I heard Iron Maiden for the first time and Adrian Smith changed my life! He sounded so cool, I wanted to play guitar!! And I wanted to play like that!!

One problem….no guitar (my little acoustic guitar had been in the guitar version of heaven for some years). So, having left School at 15 and earning what I thought was good money(cough), I went and purchased a cheap Strat copy and practice amp form a small music store close to my house. Got it home turned up the distortion and again proceeded to torture my parents and the surrounding neighbours with a volley of horrendous noise…which I thought sounded cool. I had to face the facts though, if I wanted to be in a band, I needed to learn to play.

So, I did, I learned country songs and Beatles songs and started to understand how to put whole songs together and actually not suck!  That is to not get my parents to yell at me to ‘’turn that awful noise down!!’’

I was inspired by the new Guns and Roses album Appetite for Destruction and a whole new generation of rock bands coming into our consciousness in the late 80’s and early 90’s that’s shaped my direction from then on

All the different music that I learned to play at this time, very much shaped how I write today, never limiting myself by being tied to one musical style

From my first awful sounding... way too distorted ...garage bands when I was about 17, to the early bar days where I learned to be a proper working musician once I was of age, and then touring and support bands. I have been blessed to play with some great people I my career

In 2007 I formed another band with a former band mate and was away again. The band SplintA (we used an existing band name) was quite successful on the pub and club circuit. We managed to get a loyal following where we played often and gave high energy and a great show where we were not so well known.

I played in SplintA for 4-5 years until my departure August of 2012

I played at home again and sat in with various bands again until I was asked to sit in with a band called Dissolve in late 2012 (I think that’s right). Among the members were Ian Black, Karl Mai and Daniel Hart.

I was ready to play…

After the demise of Dissolve in 2014, Ian, Karl and I formed a trio we called Switch. This band to this day is the most fun I’ve ever had playing music.

Switch allowed me to expand my talents as a lead singer, something that id only done in small doses before. Dan joined Switch later as we moved the line-up to accommodate personal circumstances and bigger gigs

After just over 2 years in Switch the opportunity to join the band Fuser (now Five Minutes to Mayhem) came about after their Guitarist left the band. The fit felt right immediately. Having Ian Karl and Dan in there made this almost seamless for me to feel right at home. Dave Morello was instantly welcoming and we all got down to making our first Live show opening for Everclear a success. It was!!

After having been with Fuser for 4 years and am loving every minute of it, the name was changed to Five Minutes to Mayhem to eliminate confusion over bands and artists with the same or similar names.

We have worked hard for the last 2 years to really sharpen our skills as a live act, re arranging songs and recording rehearsals to get the right live atmosphere, everything we play is live!!! No exceptions

I still play guitar and write at home every day, it’s hard to imagine a day without it being part of the daily routine, it’s a great friend to have

Outside of the band I have had a very successful career as a Sales Executive in a number of companies. This enables me to engage with a wide variety of people in many different levels of business

In my downtime when I get some, I like to play golf with friends. My partner and I enjoy family time with our respective kids doing all manner of activities, from beaches to movies to all sorts of adventures the children may dream up. We even get the odd bit of precious time to ourselves!!

I continue to be inspired by some amazing guitarists, and you truly never stop learning your craft. And although I may never have really sounded like him, I’m still a huge Adrian Smith fan to this day!!

I love to play, I love to write songs and to perform for others and see that we make them happy for a little while, to be part of an industry where my passion is my work is just amazing.

Yeah….. Maybe ill keep up with this guitar thing
